It’s 1861 on the eve of the Civil War. But for the Freeman family, it’s still just another day in the Virginia countryside. Arabella Freeman’s horse is spooked by her neighbor’s target practice.
Charles Freeman, laden with picnic supplies, hails his neighbors to stop shooting.
Justine dismounts to help Arabella calm her horse while one of the neighbors leers at her. She was enslaved by these neighbors as a young girl but has since been taken in by the Freeman Family. She has no patience for their attempts at rattling Arabella and Charles.
There will be difficult days ahead, but the bond between Arabella and Justine will endure.
